A real fur coat represents the ultimate symbol of status, elegance, and femininity. No sophisticated, fashion-loving female’s wardrobe was complete without one. But there are so many questions especially if you are buying a real fur coat for the first time. Because fur coats are expensive, people want to know more about them. We have the answers to the most common fur questions.
Why there are fingerprints left on the fur coat?
This doesn’t mean that your fur coat isn’t good quality. The fur is so soft that after touching it gets flattened. To get rid of dents, just shake the garment up or comb it with a special comb for animal hair.
Why my fur coat has a slight smell?
Before being turned into a ready-to-wear garment, any pelt is subjected to several operations in the process of which it might acquire a peculiar smell. If your fur coat has an intense smell, it means that it has gone through anti-moth processing or dry-cleaning, etc. The smell of chemicals, after a certain time, disappears. You practically will not notice it. The more the fur coat is being in natural conditions – on the street, and even on the frosty day, the sooner the smell disappears.
Have in mind that the fragrance of fur is a certain indicator of the age of the product. If the product is sewn a few years ago, then there will be no smell at all or, at least, much. The new one, as already mentioned above – must smell. So you don’t have to worry!
How can I protect my fur coat from moth damage?
The worst fur enemy is the moth. What happens as the result of improper storage of the garment. To avoid it, make sure that you’ve cleaned the garment and put it into the casing before storing it. This will lower the risk of moth appearance. Since moths can not stand fresh air and sunshine, you can take out your fur coat at least once a month. Furthermore, try to air the room and wardrobe at least once a month.
There is another way of conducting moth preventive measures including such anti-moth tools as tablets, powders, fumigators, etc. They kill the moth larvae but have an unpleasant smell, that’s why you’ll have to air the fur coat well before putting it on.
Why there are seams and holes on the coat?
During the animals’ life span, insect bites, hairless spots, scratches, and scars appear inevitably. All these spots are the seams that customers are usually suspicious of. These seams are the traces of deleting the natural defects of the pelt. For example, holes near the seam are signs of the brackets with which the pelt was fixed on the wooden base. These holes and seams do not affect the durability of your fur coat.
Why there are some hairs left on the car seat from my fur coat?
If you find fur pieces on the car seat, this doesn’t mean that your fur has bad quality. This is caused by the textile car seat casings. The fabric of the car has a cellular structure when a person in the fur coat sits on the car seat, fur gets stuck in the cells and when the person gets up, the cellular structure returns to its original state and some fur gets stuck. To prevent this, make sure that you have a smooth casing made of velour or leather or you can put a piece of fabric in the car seats before you get into the car to make sure that your fur coat will be fine.
How long does my fur coat last?
That depends on the type of fur. It is not unusual to see mink coats that are still in good condition after 20-25 or more years of use. Furs that are properly stored during hot weather can last up to 50 years or more. Beaver and Persian Lamb, as well as raccoon and coyote, are also very durable furs. Chinchilla coats, the softest of all the furs, is more fragile. The use you can get from your fur is further extended by remodeling.
Is my fur coat made from full skins or pieces?
Once you have decided you wear a fur coat another factor to consider when choosing your fur is whether it is made with full pelts or pieces of pelts sewn together. A fur coat made from whole pelts has higher quality and will cost more than a fur coat made from cropped fur.
Cropped coats are made either wholly or partially of paws, gills, tails and other pieces sewn together. Because it is made from pieces sewn together, creating many seams, a pieced coat may not appear as symmetrical or wear as well as a coat made from whole skins. However, a good cropped coat from an experienced furrier can be very attractive and will be cheaper than a whole skinned coat.
How should your fur coat fit you?
Look at the coat from all angles. If you usually wear a sweater or blazer, try it on with your coat to ensure you’ll be comfortable wearing them together. Your coat should fit well and feel light on your shoulders. The shoulders, sleeve edges, and hem of the coat should fall evenly all around. The fur should look lustrous and the natural markings in the fur should be uniform. It should feel soft and silky to the touch and the skins underneath should feel soft and pliable.
What is the difference between female and male mink?
Female mink is generally lighter in weight, softer, and more supple than male mink. Additionally, female pelts have higher luster, are very silky and soft, and are more adaptable to tailoring and draping. Male mink is often used to create a different fashion look and is also of excellent quality.
